How do I hire a good Search Marketing agency?

Question by John C: How do I hire a good Search Marketing agency?
I need to hire an agency to manage my search marketing campaigns. What are the right questions to ask potential agencies so I know I'm making the right decision? What should I look for?

Ask about their experience. A lot of companies may not be able to share specifics of their clients, but should give you a general idea of what their capabilities are. Let them know what you're looking to achieve - ROI, ROAS, CPA and let them show you what they think would be the best strategy.

I also think it's important that the agency has good relationships with the engines. They may be able to get things done faster and have more pull if there is already an existing relationship.

When you begin talking to agencies, let them do most of the talking. Ask questions if there's anything you don't understand. You don't want an agency who is not willing to answer your questions. Also ask what services they offer - do they just do paid search or do they offer organic search optimization? Will they write copy for you? How often is reporting done - what kind of info will you find in the reports? What is the typical timeline for a campaign launch?
